The following lines are a short excerpt from an article published by the magazine _The Writer_ in Jan 05, an article by someone named Linda Formichelli entitled "Making the MFA Cut." While the info-bites themselves are nothing new, and (unfortunately, in my opinion) actually the right advice if you want to be accepted to almost any reputable program, check OUT her juxtaposing:
"Generally, we'd advise applicants to avoid genres (i.e. science fiction, romance, epic poems, etc.) and to choose work that represents their best efforts," Rodman says. We look for mastery of basic skills, ambition and an awareness of audience."
Does anyone else find the implications here offensive? I mean, Christ-- what are Arthur C., Charlotte B., John M.? Chittering idiots barely able to control their own pens?
The world can be a cold place.
